iPad 3 Launches in March, “iPad 4″ to be Released in October

In an effort to continue throwing ideas at the wall to see what might stick, the only occasionally reliable Digitimes today reported that not only will Apple be releasing the iPad 3 with high-resolution “Retina” display in March as is widely expected, but that the company will follow that up with the release of the iPad 4 in October.

On the topic of the iPad 3, Digitimes suggests that the Retina display will be the main attraction of the new device, with better battery life also serving to entice customers. But other hardware upgrades for the iPad 3 are said to be rather minimal, as Apple is reportedly rolling out the iPad 3 alongside an iPad 2 price cut to $399 as an interim effort to set the stage for a bigger battle with the competition later in the year.

Apple will ship the so-called “iPad 3″ with a full HD display in March and then “iPad 4″ – named so by its component suppliers – with killer applications in October, according to industry sources in Taiwan. [...]

But a true battle for market share will arrive in the second half of the year when Apple ships its iPad 4 in October, about the time when Microsoft releases its Window 8 and Intel unveils its Clover Trail-W platform, the sources commented.

The 9.7-inch iPad 4 is expected to come with much upgraded hardware specifications and integrated applications so as to compete with an array of Android-, Wintel- or WoA (Windows on ARM)-based tablet PCs to be released in the fourth quarter, said the sources.

The rumor is somewhat reminiscent of last year’s round of claims, which suggested that the iPad 2′s successor would appear in late 2011 as an interim upgrade carrying a Retina display. Claims of a late 2011 iPad came from several different sources in July and early August of last year before other sources including The Wall Street Journal put the claim to rest.

Digitimes has a proliferative record of Apple-related rumors and has occasionally offered accurate information. But its information is generally considered unreliable given a significant number of claims that have failed to materialize. Claims of two separate iPad launches this year are sure to pique rest though, and we’ll be waiting to hear if other sources offer similar information going forward.

Looks too good to be true on my part.

What’s your take in this new Apple fiasco?

iPad 3: Thicker, but will support Smart Cover

The iPad 3 is likely to be thicker than its predecessor, according to a report, but will support the Apple Smart Cover.

Macotakara, a Japanese technology blog with a dubious track record on Apple rumours, said that an Asian supplier which is providing parts for the next-generation iPad that the screen size will be the same as the iPad 2 but will be thicker for an “unknown reason”.

However, despite the additional thickness, it will still support the Apple Smart Cover, as “front rounding corner will be same with current iPad”.

While the report might seem a little doubtful in origin, it isn’t the first time we’ve heard about the next-generation iPad being thicker than its predecessor. Just last month, iLounge reported that the iPad 3 would be around 0.7mm thicker than the iPad 2.

This additional thickness is apparently required to accomodate dual-light bars needed for a higher resolution display. The higher resolution display, which is likely to be four times the current 2048 x 1536 according to reports will need more than just a single LED light bar to maintain its brightness.

However, more recent reports cast doubt on the dual-light bar theory, with Apple planning to use Sharp’s IGZO (indium-gallium-zinc) LCD panels for the iPad 3 instead.

IGZO technology could be a good solution to Apple’s requirement for high-resolution, low-power displays as it doesn’t require the IPS (in-plane switching) panel technology to provide wide viewing angles, nor will it necessitate dual-bar LED backlighting.

What do you think? Think a USB port is causing the iPad 3′s thickness? *fingers crossed*

Apple Plans to Release iPad 3 in 2012 With iPhone 5 to Follow

Strong rumors are buzzing over at AppleInsider that a new iPad 3 will be released in the summer, with the iPhone 5 following closely behind in the fall.

Japanese technology website Makotakara got word that the main carrier in Japan, NTT DOCOMO, is currently involved in negotiations with Apple to release the next generation iPad with integrated 4G Long Term Evolution (LTE) radio technology. The upcoming iPhone 5 is also expected to have LTE connectivity.

The discussions with DOCOMO took place on Apple’s turf and some of the conditions are still under negotiation, but the top officials “agreed in principle” with the deal.

Think the rumor’s true?
I sure do hope so.

Next iPad to Launch in March

iPad 2

iPad 2 will get a minor facelift in March, as Apple rolls out their new tablet, which boasts a thinner screen and better battery life.

It’s unclear what the tablet will be named (iPad 2S?), but the ‘real’ iPad 3 will be available in the third quarter of 2012. The iPad 3 is rumored to have Retina Display and faster A6 processor, but production is taking slower than expected for the tablet. If that weren’t enough iPads for Apple, the company is planning to release a cheaper version of their beloved tablet in the second quarter of 2012.

Are you an iPad fan? I really hope the next iPad will have a USB port this time.

What do you think?

Steve Jobs: “I’m going to destroy Android”

The Associated Press obtained an early copy of Walter Isaacson’s Steve Jobs biographyand shared some highlights.

Steve Jobs

In particular, they share Steve Jobs’ reaction to HTC’s 2010 introduction of an Android phone that shared many features of the iPhone. Jobs told Isaacson that Google’s actions amounted to “grand theft.”

“I will spend my last dying breath if I need to, and I will spend every penny of Apple’s $40 billion in the bank, to right this wrong,” Jobs said. “I’m going to destroy Android, because it’s a stolen product. I’m willing to go thermonuclear war on this.”

Jobs met with Google’s Eric Schmidt later and told Schmidt he wasn’t interested in settling for any amount of money. Instead Jobs told Schmidt, “I want you to stop using our ideas in Android, that’s all I want.”

Jobs’ attitude against Android helps explains the lawsuits that have come from Apple against both HTC and Samsung. Both legal actions have resulted in countersuits as well as attempts to ban sales of devices around the world.

I agree with Steve. Do you?

No iPhone 5 This Year, There’s the iPhone 4S though

Only hours before Apple’s actual announcement, the folks over at The Next Web dropped the bomb on what Apple has planned for the iPhone.

According to the site’s trusted sources inside Apple, the iPhone 4S will be launched today with a 8 megapixel camera, A5 processor, 1 GB of RAM, “improved optics,” and a “more accurate differential GPS stage.” The iPhone 5 ‘teardrop’ design that Apple was rumored to unveil won’t be released this year.

Matt Brian of The Next Web:

“Sources familiar with Apple’s plans have revealed to us that Apple will indeed debut the new iPhone 4S today, featuring an 8-megapixel camera with “improved optics” and a “more accurate differential GPS stage” thanks to Apple’s new Qualcomm chipset.

Our sources tell us the iPhone 4S “is much more powerful than an iPhone 4″ and “feels like the high-end device”, all but confirming that the device will feature Apple’s new A5 processor and include 1GB RAM, as tipped in previous reports, noting that the device will retain the same dimensions and design as the iPhone 4.”

The 8 megapixel camera will come courtesy of Sony, as was previously reported.

The iPhone 5 rumor that was started back in April has also been squashed:

“We were also told that the iPhone 5, which is rumored to sport a teardrop design and aluminium unibody, is merely an Apple prototype for a future iPhone 5 “which won’t be available any time soon”, as the “iPhone 4S will have the same dimensions.”

The iPhone 4S was directly named by Apple in iTunes beta code, and the image associated with the name was of a CDMA iPhone 4. The two devices have been rumored to be nearly identical in physical design, with improved internals and iOS 5′s Assistant feature separating the 4S from its predecessor.

Are you upset that there won’t be an iPhone 5 today? Or will the 4S be enough?

iPhone Media Event All Set for October 4

Confirming earlier reports, Apple issued media invitations for a special iPhone event to be held next Tuesday, October 4th at the company’s Town Hall auditorium at its headquarters in Cupertino, California. The event is scheduled to begin at 10:00 AM Pacific Time.

As noted by The Loop, invitations for the event carry the tagline “Let’s talk iPhone” and depict iOS icons for Calendar, Clock, Maps, and Phone.

Let's talk!

Apple is of course widely expected to introduce its next-generation hardware (whether it be iPhone 4S, iPhone 5, or both) at the event, and is expected to also be including a minor update to its iPod line. iOS 5 and iCloud are also expected to be topics of discussion at the event, while other reports have indicated that Facebook may launch its iPad app at the event.

Who’s going? Leave a comment if you are.

Apple’s iPhone 5 Media Event Scheduled for October 4

iPhone 5 Media Event

AllThingsD reports that Apple will be holding its highly-anticipated iPhone 5 media event on October 4th.

While Apple could certainly change its plans anytime, sources said that the October 4 date has been selected by the company to showcase the iPhone 5. Sources added that the plan is now to make the new device available for purchase within a few weeks after the announcement.

According to the report, new Apple CEO Tim Cook should play a prominent role in the event in order to assert himself as the new leader of the company, although it will almost certainly be a team presentation with other executives such as Phil Schiller, Scott Forstall, and Eddy Cue leading portions of the event. It is unclear whether Steve Jobs will make an appearance at the event, with the report suggesting that a decision on whether or not he appears would be a last-minute one based on his health.

Apple is also expected to introduce minor updates to its iPod line, and had pinpointed the first week in October for that introduction, with availability set for the middle of the month. Apple generally issues invitations to its media events about a week ahead of time, so we can expect official notice of the event to appear sometime around early next week.

The wait for the new iPhone 5 is getting really nerve wracking but it sure is worth it!

Is the iPhone N94 Prototype Back Cover the actual iPhone 5?

This image from MacPost.net offers the first look at the back cover of an upcoming iPhone. This prototype part is labeled “EVT” (Engineering Verification Test) and dated June 7, 2011.

iPhone 5G Back Cover White

What’s most revealing about this part is that it is actually labeled with the internal model number “N94″. N94 is the model number for what we believe to be a next-generation iPhone. N94 first appeared in SDK code back in iOS 4.3. At the time, the N94 was identified as supporting an A5 processor — that’s the same processor found in the iPad 2.

Meanwhile, the AT&T iPhone 4 carries the model designation N90 while the Verizon iPhone 4 is called the N92. Both current iPhone 4 models use the slower A4 processor.

I also heard about the N94 in April when BGR claimed that it had a photo of a prototype N94 that supported T-Mobile’s 3G service. They showed photos of the device at the time. What’s interesting to note now is that the prototype iPhone had a visible antenna break at the bottom left, and no antenna break in the top left — just like the iPhone 4. (Unfortunately, the other side of the device is not visible in any of the shots.)

So, here’s what I think I know about the N94, based on the circulating rumors:

  • It looks like an iPhone 4
  • Has a redesigned antenna
  • Supports T-Mobile
  • A5 Processor

So is the N94 the actual iPhone 5? Possibly. MacPost also published photos of associated parts which include items I’ve seen before. These have been labeled as ”iPhone 5″ parts in the past, but now seem to be associated with this particular case design. That means all the part leaks I’ve seen so far are for this iPhone 4-like design. If so, Reuters may have been right in saying that the iPhone 5 will look “largely similar to the iPhone 4″. Could this be the cheaper iPhone 4 variant? Also possible, but that would mean Apple would be supplying A5 processors in their “cheap” version as well.

What of the tapered iPhone 5 designs that we’ve seen circulating? Those were sourced from a ThisIsMyNext article and subsequent case design leak and actual cases for sale. As I’ve said before, Chinese case manufacturers have a big financial incentive to get case designs ahead of Apple’s launch, but they’ve been wrong before. As far as I can tell, I’ve not seen any actual part leaks from that rumored thinner/tapered design.

I’m getting all antsy about the iPhone 5! Are you?
